If you own a VFC G36C, you know the platform’s one real weakness: mounting options. Unlike AR-style rifles with rail space everywhere, the G36C gives you just two small screw holes on the handguard for accessories. You can buy commercial Picatinny rail adapters, but they add bulk and cost, and they compromise the G36’s distinctive sleek profile.
“I love the G36C kind of classic style look,” 6mm Badger explains in the video. “The issues that you have with it however are mounting options. You can go and buy actual Picatinny rails that will attach onto a G36C, but for me I do like the look of it but it does make it quite bulky.”
So instead of settling for a bulky commercial adapter, I built a purpose-made rail setup for this specific platform — and the whole thing cost under $25 in filament.
The G36C Mounting Challenge
The VFC G36C presents a unique problem for anyone who wants to customize it. The factory handguard has only two screw holes for mounting, which is a fraction of what you get on an AR platform. Companies like Matrix sell Picatinny rail adapters that bolt on, but they add significant bulk and weight, and they change the look of the gun.
The goal here was to add real mounting surface — M-Lok compatibility, top rails, the works — without wrecking the G36’s clean silhouette.
The Build: Wazuki’s G36C Rail Systems
The parts come from creator Wazuki (W-A-Z-O-O-K-I) on the Bamboo Labs marketplace, who offers free 3D printable files designed specifically for the VFC G36C. These aren’t generic adapters — they’re purpose-built components that keep the platform’s aesthetic while adding modern functionality.
Two Rail Options for Different Needs
Wazuki offers two distinct rail systems for the VFC G36C:
- Geissele-style Rail Handguard: A more AR-inspired look with extensive M-Lok compatibility across three levels of mounting surfaces. Ideal if you want maximum accessory flexibility with a professional tactical appearance.
- M-Lok Handguard (Standard): Available with or without top rails, this preserves more of the G36’s original character while adding modern M-Lok functionality. Perfect for purists who want to enhance function without transforming the platform’s identity.
Print Quality and Cost
I printed these parts using ABSGF (ABS with glass fiber) filament — a material I’d never used before — on my Bamboo Labs H2D printer. The results were genuinely surprising.
“The quality of the actual build is amazing,” Ed notes. “I sent a couple of pictures to my friends and they were like, ‘I didn’t think that was 3D printed.’ It doesn’t look 3D printed.”
The cost breakdown: - Filament cost: Approximately $3-4 per rail - Print time: 14 hours for rails (with 100% infill for maximum durability) - Total investment: Under $25 including filament and electricity
Compare that to commercial aftermarket rails that run $50-150, and the value is obvious.
PMAG Skins: Fixing the One Visual Tell
Beyond the rails, Wazuki also offers 3D printable PMAG skins that transform the look of VFC G36C magazines. These replace the factory magazine appearance with a more realistic PMAG aesthetic — addressing one of the few visual tells that these are airsoft replicas.
“You’re going from this which does kind of look good,” Ed explains, “but when you get up close and personal to these rounds, it’s very clear that they’re not real rounds. Now it’s gone to this which I think actually just looks a lot more realistic.”
The install is straightforward: remove the base plate, extract the internal components, and attach the printed skin. It’s about 6 hours of print time and it significantly boosts the platform’s realism.
Compatibility Notes
These parts are specifically designed for the VFC G36C gas blowback version. They may work with JG AEG versions, but some modification might be required — always test fit before committing to a full print.
The Verdict
“This is probably the best 3D parts I’ve ever printed for airsoft by a long way,” Ed concludes. For a VFC G36C owner, this build solves the platform’s biggest limitation — mounting — for a fraction of the cost of commercial parts, and it does it without wrecking the G36’s look.
